Carlo Ratti Designs Buzzi Heritage Cultural Center in Italy with Digital Concrete Innovation

The Italian multinational cement company Buzzi Unicem has commissioned architect Carlo Ratti's firm CRA - Carlo Ratti Associati to design the Buzzi Heritage Cultural Center in Casale Monferrato, Italy. The project will transform two former school buildings into a cultural hub housing the company's historical archive while promoting research and public activities. The design introduces a pioneering application of digital fabrication to reinforced concrete construction, featuring a 100-meter digitally fabricated truss system that connects the buildings over a garden. This represents the first practical implementation of a patented structural system developed through research collaboration with Maestro Technologies, aiming to reduce material waste and construction time while enhancing structural performance. The center will include public green spaces and courtyards that transition from public to private areas, with a specially developed concrete mixture optimized by Buzzi's R&D laboratories.
