Carla Gannis presents digital self-portraits and video at Transfer gallery in Bushwick

Carla Gannis, known for her digital reinterpretation of Hieronymus Bosch using emojis, is exhibiting at Transfer gallery in Bushwick. Her show, titled after Joseph Kosuth's 1966 neon sculpture 'A Subject Self-Defined,' features the animated video 'Nude Descending a Staircase' from 2015, which references Marcel Duchamp, Kosuth, and Cindy Sherman. The exhibition includes 52 digital drawings from her forthcoming book 'Carla Gannis: The Selfie Drawings,' scheduled for publication on March 5. Gannis has long explored conceptual disruptions through avatars in cyber realms, examining the psychological tension between physical and virtual supports. The gallery, located at 1030 Metropolitan Avenue, is open Saturdays from 12-6 PM or by appointment. A reception originally postponed due to blizzard Jonas is now set for January 30 from 6-10 PM. Her work continues to bridge digital media and handmade expression, as seen in her marine-themed descent imagery.
