Capitolium Art Auction Features 19th-Century Works by Troubetzkoy, Hesse, Rebell, Santoro

Capitolium Art is holding an auction of 19th-century paintings and sculptures on June 10, 2026, at Palazzo Cigola Fenaroli Valotti in Brescia. The sale includes a bronze sculpture by Paul Troubetzkoy (1866-1938), titled "Come potete divorarmi?" (How can you devour me?), depicting a lamb and reflecting the artist's ethical vegetarianism shared with friends Leo Tolstoy and George Bernard Shaw. Troubetzkoy, celebrated with a current exhibition at Galleria d'Arte Moderna di Milano co-produced with Musée d'Orsay, was a portraitist of Belle Époque high society. The sculpture is estimated at €2,000-3,000. Also featured is a watercolor by Hermann Hesse, the 1946 Nobel laureate in literature, painted in 1919 after his move to Montagnola, Ticino, where he created works like Siddhartha. The landscape is valued at €8,000-12,000. A nocturnal painting of Vesuvius erupting by Josef Rebell (1787-1828), a Viennese artist who influenced the School of Posillipo, is estimated at €6,000-8,000. Rebell worked at the court of Joachim Murat and Caroline Bonaparte in Naples. A Venetian view by Rubens Santoro (1859-1942), a Calabrian painter known for picturesque cityscapes, is estimated at €10,000-15,000.
