Calixto Bieito's Visionary Staging of Mozart's Idomeneo Features Spectral Figures

Director Calixto Bieito has created a new production of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's opera 'Idomeneo, re di Creta' at the Residenztheater in Munich. The staging, which premiered on January 29, 1781, features a cast including American tenor Joshua Stewart and a French mezzo-soprano, with musical direction by Enrico Onofri. Bieito's interpretation incorporates a multitude of chimerical and apparitional figures, presenting a distinctive visual approach to Mozart's 1781 work, which is based on an earlier 1712 opera by André Campra with a libretto by Antoine Danchet.
