Calder's Miniature Sculptures Paired with Calatrava's Architectural Installation at Dominique Lévy Gallery

exhibition · 2026-04-22

From April 22 to June 13, 2015, the Dominique Lévy Gallery showcased "MULTUM IN PARVO," an exhibition featuring Alexander Calder's small sculptures at 909 Madison Avenue, NYC. Over thirty pieces were on display, including both stabiles and mobiles. The installation, designed by architect Santiago Calatrava and his son Gabriel, utilized steel and glass vitrines for the smaller works and circular tables for the larger ones. This design highlighted the contrast between Calder's handcrafted pieces and its sleek whiteness and curves. The exhibition's title, meaning "much in little," was inspired by Carl Zigrosser. Critic Jed Perl remarked on Calder's fascination with miniature forms, noting his historical collaborations with architects such as Frank Gehry and Jose Luis Sert.
