Busto Arsizio's 19th-Century Austrian Prison Transformed into Cultural Hub with €2.35M Renovation

A 19th-century Austrian prison in Busto Arsizio has been converted into a cultural center, expanding the city's Biblioteca comunale “G.B. Roggia”. The complex at Via Borroni, originally built between 1851 and 1854 based on engineer Giuseppe Brivio's design, underwent a €2.35 million restoration. Over €1.7 million came from European PNRR – NextGenerationEU funds. Inaugurated on March 22, 2026, the project introduces study rooms, reading areas, multifunctional spaces, and a literary café across three levels. Historical elements like cell doors, grates, and prisoner graffiti were preserved through a "minimal intervention" approach. Contemporary furnishings in vibrant colors now contrast with the austere 19th-century walls, featuring steel and polypropylene furniture, magnetic boards, and modular acoustic panels made from recycled PET. This transformation revitalizes a building that had long been marginalized, creating new spaces for students, readers, and cultural programming. The development strengthens Busto Arsizio's cultural network alongside the Biblioteca civica and Civiche Raccolte d'Arte at Palazzo Marliani Cicogna.
