Burgh House exhibition marks Constable's 250th birthday

To commemorate the 250th birthday of Suffolk-born artist John Constable, Burgh House in Hampstead is hosting 'John Constable in Hampstead.' The exhibition, which opens on 11 June, delves into Constable's nearly two-decade relationship with Hampstead Heath, where he both lived and created art. It showcases a selection of rarely exhibited paintings, mezzotints, portraits, and personal correspondence, highlighting how the locale inspired and sheltered him. Constable arrived in Hampstead in 1819 with his wife, Maria Bicknell, seeking healthier air due to her deteriorating tuberculosis. The exhibition reflects on his interactions with the landscape, weather, and community during this significant time in his life.
