Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show: From Omaha Launch to 1913 Collapse
In 1883, William Frederick Cody, famously known as Buffalo Bill, established Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show in Omaha, Nebraska. At its height, the spectacle employed around 1,200 individuals and showcased buffalo, cowboys, Native American tribes, and sharpshooters. In 1884, it toured across the U.S. and Canada before making its European debut at Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee in 1887, where it presented over 300 performances and sold 2.5 million tickets. Over three decades, the show delivered more than 3,000 performances, featuring stars like Annie Oakley, Calamity Jane, and Sitting Bull. After 1900, the lineup expanded to include Argentine gauchos and Zulu warriors. However, by 1910, dwindling ticket sales due to competition led to its closure in October 1913. Cody passed away in 1917 at the age of 71.
