Brooklyn Townhouse Renovated for Multigenerational Living by Studio Fabian Lorenz

A historic three-family residence in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, New York, has been transformed through a comprehensive renovation project. The property was acquired by Jennifer Suhr, a filmmaker and screenwriter, and Michael Curtes, a digital product designer, who sought to create a durable home adaptable to their family's evolving requirements. Their vision included accommodating their two children, hosting social events, and eventually providing permanent housing for elderly relatives. They engaged Studio Fabian Lorenz, a local architectural practice, to manage the redesign, which emphasizes flexibility across different life stages. Extensive water damage necessitated a complete interior overhaul. The layout was reconfigured into a two-family dwelling with an upper unit. Initially, this upper space will serve as rental accommodations but is intended to later become living quarters for grandparents. A connecting staircase allows the two units to be combined or function as separate residences, enabling the property to shift between single-family and multi-family use as needed. This project addresses contemporary housing needs by supporting cross-generational cohabitation through adaptable architectural solutions.
