Bronze Signet Ring Depicting the Lighthouse of Alexandria Discovered in Underwater Excavation
A bronze signet ring with an engraving of the Lighthouse of Alexandria has been found on the submerged Royal Island of Antirhodos, located in Alexandria's Portus Magnus. This significant excavation was led by Franck Goddio from the European Institute for Underwater Archaeology (IEASM), with support from the Hilti Foundation and Egypt's ministry for tourism and antiquities. It's the only known ring of its kind, discovered in the legendary palace of Antirhodos, which Strabo visited between 29 and 25 BC. The team also uncovered pottery and glass artifacts dating from the fourth century BC to the fourth century AD. Egypt's tourism minister, Sherif Fathi, noted that the engraving resembles coins from the second century AD.
