Brian K. Vaughan Announces New Comic 'Roam' with Cliff Chiang at New York Comic Con

publication · 2026-10-15

At New York Comic Con, writer Brian K. Vaughan and artist Cliff Chiang revealed they are collaborating on a new comic series titled Roam, set for release in February. The announcement came during a panel ostensibly focused on Paper Girls, their previous comic that was adapted into a 2022 Amazon Prime Video series. Roam is a superhero sci-fi series set in the distant future where everyone gets to be a superhero, but only while they're young. Vaughan described it as completely unlike Paper Girls or anything he's done before, and his first true superhero book. He also discussed his role as cowriter of Dune: Part Three with director Denis Villeneuve, though he remained tight-lipped about details until the film's release on December 18. Vaughan expressed fears about AI's impact on comics, film, and TV, noting that jobs in previsualization, storyboarding, and editing are disappearing. He mentioned that AI is a component in Roam's story. Vaughan's career includes work on Saga, Y: The Last Man, Marvel's Runaways, and writing for Lost and Under the Dome. He explained his reluctance to adapt his own comics, citing Richard Price's analogy about self-adaptation being like giving yourself a root canal. He also reflected on the challenges of writing for commercial breaks on Lost. The new series marks a return to original comics for Vaughan, who has spent much of the last decade adapting or being adapted.
