Brescia's Civic Museums Expand Social Mission with Inclusive Art Programs for Vulnerable Communities

The Civic Museums of Brescia, managed by Fondazione Brescia Musei, are implementing a comprehensive social mission alongside their scientific and educational functions. A notable 2024 project titled "Vittoria alata e Nike senza ali" (Winged Victory and Wingless Nike) was proposed by Greek artist Mary Zygouri and curated by Elettra Stamboulis, realized with Cooperativa La Rondine. This project engaged individuals with cognitive disabilities, using Brescia's iconic 1st-century bronze statue, the Winged Victory, as a symbolic starting point to explore themes of success and aspiration. The initiative aimed to facilitate artistic expression and reinterpret cultural heritage, encouraging participants to create their own artistic actions. The museums' methodology emphasizes principles of welcome, shared rules for safe and respectful use of public spaces, and the creation of new human relationships through experimental activities. These programs view art as having therapeutic potential, capable of healing wounds and addressing existential anxieties. While the economic impact on institutional budgets is described as minimal, the social value generated is considered significant.
