Breastfeeding Activists Pose Before Old Masters in Berlin Museums

In Berlin, more than 100 women took part in the #ichstillwoichwill (I breastfeed where I want) initiative, holding breastfeeding protests at the Bode-Museum and Gemäldegalerie. This event, organized by Katharina Kokott from the Mama Netzwerk Berlin through Instagram, aimed to challenge the stigma surrounding public breastfeeding. Demonstrators also nursed in various locations, including the U-Bahn, Alexanderplatz, supermarkets, lecture halls, and churches. The Bode-Museum recently obtained a 16th-century 'Maria lactans' reliquary bust, while the Gemäldegalerie showcases allegorical nursing figures like 'Carità' (1570) by Luca Cambiaso. Despite breastfeeding being allowed in Berlin's state museums, activists sought to promote its acceptance in public spaces. A survey revealed that one in six individuals disapproves of public breastfeeding, often imposing conditions. Participants experienced unwelcome gazes and men trying to take photos.
