Brazil Adds BYD to Labor Blacklist Following Investigation of Factory Conditions

Brazil's Ministry of Labour and Employment has placed BYD Auto do Brasil Ltda. on its official register of employers violating labor standards, known as the "dirty list." This action followed an administrative process concluding a December 2024 rescue operation at the company's factory construction site in Camaçari, Bahia. Government officials reported that staff endured excessively long work hours while living in degrading accommodation. A civil public action filed by the federal labour prosecutor's office details inspectors' findings, noting that upon arrival, the site was nearly empty with machinery idle. Brazilian workers informed auditors that their Chinese colleagues typically worked seven days a week, including public holidays, and were only given time off because the inspection was scheduled. The semi-annual revision of the Cadastro de Empregadores added 169 employers in total.
