Boris Mikhailov photograph stolen from Lithuanian museum during exhibition

A photograph by Ukrainian artist Boris Mikhailov was stolen from the Radvila Palace Museum of Art in Vilnius, part of the Lithuanian National Museum of Art, on June 28. The work was part of the exhibition 'Ukrainian Dreamers: Kharkiv School of Photography' and disappeared around 1:30 PM. Security cameras captured the theft, and police are investigating. Museum director Arūnas Gelūnas stated the theft appeared planned, as the perpetrator likely knew Mikhailov's significance and market value. The stolen photograph belongs to the series 'At Dusk' (1993), comprising 111 small panoramic images hand-colored, documenting post-Soviet collapse in Kharkiv. In the exhibition, works were installed low to the ground as per the artist's design. Valued at approximately €7,000, the theft is classified as simple theft, punishable by up to three years in prison. The last theft at the museum occurred over two decades ago, prompting calls for enhanced security. Mikhailov, represented by Marian Goodman Gallery, has received the Hasselblad Award, Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation Prize, and Rencontres d'Arles book prize.
