Bodil Ouédraogo's Practice Explores Inheritance Through West African Textiles and Sculpture at gelijk is ongelijk

exhibition · 2026-04-08

Bodil Ouédraogo, an artist, creates installations that delve into the concept of inheritance through relationships, using materials like bazin riche fabric and West African wooden sculptures. Her work draws from Édouard Glissant's notion of opacity, which challenges the demand for transparency. In partnership with the fashion brand Patta, she has transformed traditional ceremonial textiles into streetwear, highlighting the blend of West African fashion and Amsterdam's urban vibe. One of her pieces, Framed Intimacy 01, reexamines sculptures from her father, Mamadou Ouédraogo, using ID photo formats to question recognition norms. Her exhibition, Crossing Threads, occurs at gelijk is ongelijk from 14 November 2025 to 17 January 2026, featuring artists like FreelingWaters. Curator Robbie Schweiger, who established gelijk is ongelijk in late 2023, relocated it to Kruisbaakweg 5B on 14 February, emphasizing material culture in contemporary art.
