Bloco Arquitetos Designs Windowless Residence in Brasília with Central Courtyard

The Brazilian architecture firm Bloco Arquitetos has finished constructing Casa Tupin, a residential project located in a gated community approximately 20 kilometers from Brasília. Completed in 2025, the 420-square-meter home features a rectangular layout organized around a large central courtyard. The design intentionally omits conventional windows, instead employing coral-colored brick screens and wide entry portals to connect interior spaces with the outdoors. These perforated brick walls serve multiple functions: they filter sunlight, provide ventilation throughout the structure, and offer thermal protection from heat. The architects described the concept as creating 'a house without windows, that is a window itself,' aiming to make the entire building mediate between indoor living and the surrounding landscape. Approximately three-quarters of the structure is elevated above ground on twelve pillars, a strategy that enhances natural airflow beneath the home, preserves the existing topography, and allows native Cerrado vegetation and small wildlife to move freely. The material palette, focused on brick and concrete, was chosen for durability and consistency, with the studio noting that this restrained approach lets light, shadow, and the passage of time become integral architectural elements. The interior layout prioritizes cross ventilation and a continuous spatial experience aligned with the structural logic. The project also preserved an existing tree at the courtyard's center.
