Bjarke Ingels Group Designs Biosphere Room with 350 Birdhouses at Sweden's Treehotel

The Biosphere room at Sweden's Treehotel, designed by Bjarke Ingels Group in collaboration with ornithologist Ulf Öhman, features a cubed structure suspended above ground with 350 birdhouses on its facade. This addition, the eighth unconventional accommodation at the hotel, aims to create habitats for northern Sweden's bird population while offering guests an immersive nature experience. The 3,800-square-foot split-level interior employs a minimalist aesthetic with large floor-to-ceiling windows and a skylight, allowing birdhouses to be visible from every vantage point. Bjarke Ingels, founder of BIG, conceived the idea after staying at Treehotel before the pandemic, seeking to deepen immersion by inviting birds and bats to cohabit. The dark wood exterior highlights the light-colored birdhouses, and the design prioritizes ecological impact, drawing inspiration from the surrounding forest.
