Billy Gérard Frank's 'Cartography of Resistance' exhibition at Moss Galleries reframes abolition as ongoing struggle

Moss Galleries is currently hosting 'Abolitionists: Cartography of Resistance and Disobedience,' a solo exhibition by artist and filmmaker Billy Gérard Frank. The show features mixed-media works and a single-channel film installation that present abolition not as a historical conclusion but as a continuing contemporary struggle. Gallery owner Elizabeth Moss described Frank's pieces as both visually compelling and intellectually urgent, noting they challenge viewers to consider how abolitionist legacies persist today. Frank employs natural indigo pigments, black ink, and gold on wood panels, fabric, and canvas to create layered material palimpsests. These surfaces incorporate historical references and contemporary resonances. The exhibition remains on view through May 23.
