Bill Fontana's Sound Installation Amplifies St. Peter's Bell Vibrations Through 2025

American artist Bill Fontana presents his sound installation 'The Mute Echoes of a Great Sound Sculpture—The Campanone of St. Peter’s' in the portico of St. Peter's Basilica in Rome until December 25, 2025. Curated by Umberto Vattani and Valentino Catricalà, the work uses advanced sensors and a twelve-speaker system to amplify imperceptible vibrations from the basilica's historic bell, transforming them into an immersive auditory experience. Supported by the Dicastery for Culture and Education and promoted by Venice International University with backing from Enel, Gruppo FS Italiane, and Meyer Sound, this marks the first contemporary art installation in St. Peter's portico. The project serves as a message of peace for the 2025 Jubilee and was previously displayed at the Vatican Pavilion during Expo Italia 2025 in Osaka, Japan. Fontana, a pioneer of sound art, collaborated with IRCAM Paris to make these typically inaudible vibrations audible.
