BIG and Artemide Illuminate Milan University with Progressive Light Installation

Architecture firm BIG, in collaboration with lighting manufacturer Artemide, has created a light installation titled 'Light Knot Progression' at the University of Milan. The work is situated beneath the arches of the Loggiato Est in the Cortile d'Onore, transforming the historic Filarete architecture with a continuous luminous drawing. The installation consists of an aluminum support holding a front-emission LED strip, forming eleven nodes that develop progressively along the arcades over a total length of 280 meters. These nodes evolve from simple configurations to increasingly complex interweavings, representing successive stages of the creative process. The luminous structure connects between columns, creating a visual promenade where each node serves as a metaphor for connection and relationship—linking ideas, people, and disciplines. This project marks ten years of collaboration between BIG and Artemide, with the light installation serving as a visual metaphor for progression and the interconnection of ideas. The work extends along more than 30 meters of arches, using 280 meters of luminous profile to create an articulated progression of nodes.
