Bice Lazzari Retrospective Arrives at Rome's Galleria Nazionale After Milan Premiere

The major retrospective 'Bice Lazzari. I linguaggi del suo tempo' has opened at Rome's Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna e Contemporanea (GNAMC), following its debut at Palazzo Citterio in Milan. Curated by Renato Miracco and organized with the Archivio, the expanded Rome presentation features 200 works, offering a comprehensive view of the Venetian-born artist who worked extensively in Rome from the 1940s. The exhibition was originally conceived for the GNAMC, according to the artist's niece Maria Isabella Barone, who notes Lazzari collaborated with architects La Padula, designers of the Palazzo della Civiltà. The show's transfer to Rome was championed by museum director Renata Cristina Mazzantini, who previously featured Lazzari at the Quirinale. Born in Venice in 1900 and died in Rome in 1981, Lazzari developed a personal abstract language influenced by music, moving to acrylic painting after a 1961 oil allergy. She participated in few women-only exhibitions, preferring to be seen simply as an artist among artists. Her first monograph was published by Editalia in 1957 with a critical text by Enrico Crispolti and preface by Lionello Venturi. The exhibition includes mural paintings, fabrics, and jewelry, reflecting her experimental approach across mediums.
