Bernini's Barberini Patronage Celebrated in Rome Exhibition Marking St. Peter's 400th Anniversary

The exhibition 'Bernini and the Barberini' is currently on display at the Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Antica – Palazzo Barberini in Rome, running until June 14, 2026. This event marks the 400th anniversary of the consecration of St. Peter's Basilica. It showcases the partnership between sculptor Gian Lorenzo Bernini (1598-1680) and his benefactor Maffeo Barberini (1568-1644), who later became Pope Urban VIII. Their collaboration began when Barberini encountered Bernini in his father’s workshop. Featured works include the 1617 sculpture 'Saint Sebastian' and significant projects for St. Peter's Basilica, such as the bronze Baldachin (1624-1633) and Saint Longinus (1629-1638). The exhibition also includes portrait busts, Bernini's personal creations, and loans like Pietro Bernini's 'Adam, Eve and the Serpent' (c. 1620-1622), with guided tours to St. Peter's Basilica available.
