Berlin Coalition Talks Aim to Revive Free Museum Sunday

institutional · 2026-10-18

Four weeks after Berlin's Abgeordnetenhaus election, Linke, Grüne and SPD have agreed on a Sondierungspapier forming the basis for upcoming coalition negotiations. It includes plans to reinstate 16 free Museum Sundays per year and a Kulturkarte for young people. The paper states that access to art, music, theater and museums must not depend on parents' income. The free-entry Museum Sunday was cut in 2024 amid savings in the culture budget; since 2021, many Berlin institutions had opened free of charge once a month, and more than 2.2 million people used the offer. The program was among projects organized by Kulturprojekte Berlin, the state-owned company founded 20 years ago, which also plans the Art Week, the Lange Nacht der Museen and historical anniversaries, most recently the New Year's Eve party at the Brandenburger Tor.
