Berkeley Hills Home Built for Photographer Henry Bowles Lists for $1,088,000

A residence at 141 Fairlawn Drive in the Berkeley Hills, California, commissioned in the early 1970s by architectural photographer Henry Bowles, has hit the market for $1,088,000 and become the most viewed listing in the United States. Bowles, who trained under Morley Baer and later shot for Condé Nast, hired modernist architect Andrew Batey when Batey was just 28 years old; the house, known as "the photographer's house," was among Batey's earliest projects before he founded Batey and Mack. The design centers on a two-story wall of glass oriented to natural light, with the kitchen and living area downstairs and a loft-like upper level holding two bedrooms and two bathrooms. A 300-square-foot darkroom with a skylight was bolted onto the single-vehicle garage, which remains and now includes an EV-charging station; the former darkroom could serve as a studio or home office. Listing agent Elizabeth Lee of EXP Realty described the intent behind the design, saying everything was oriented to the light and the trees pulled indoors. Given the attention and area demand, the asking price could be exceeded. An open house is scheduled for Saturday from midday to 3 pm.
