Bénédicte Savoy's '1815, le temps du retour' Examines Napoleonic Art Restitution Debates

Art historian Bénédicte Savoy's new book '1815, le temps du retour – Restituer l'art en Europe après l'Empire napoléonien' explores the pivotal year 1815 when European nations demanded the return of artworks seized by France during the Napoleonic Wars. From 1794 to 1811, revolutionary and imperial France systematically confiscated thousands of artworks, books, and precious objects from occupied territories including Italy, the Netherlands, Germany, Austria, and Spain, transferring them to Paris's Louvre museum. The collapse of Napoleon's empire in 1815 triggered intense public debate across Europe, Russia, and the United States about restitution, national identity, and universal heritage. Savoy argues that examining this historical moment provides critical perspective on contemporary restitution debates between European capitals and cities like Jakarta, Abuja, Beijing, Lomé, and Cotonou. The 328-page book, published by La Découverte and priced at 22 euros, appears in Beaux Arts Magazine's April 2026 issue. Savoy notes that restitution debates have never destroyed museums but rather prompted institutions to reconsider their purpose and boundaries. The publication coincides with ongoing discussions about cultural appropriation and legal status of objects looted outside Europe.
