Behind the Scenes of Projecting 70mm IMAX Film for Nolan's 'The Odyssey'

IMAX Melbourne, the only cinema in the southern hemisphere capable of projecting Christopher Nolan's 'The Odyssey' in 15-perforation 70mm film, gave The Guardian a behind-the-scenes look at the complex process. Technical manager Dan Drobik manages a 10-mile-long, 500-pound reel using a giant platter with a speed control device and sticky pivot rollers to remove dust. The film moves horizontally through the projector, unlike standard vertical film. Drobik must monitor the projection throughout the movie for any audio or visual anomalies. The cinema has sold 30,000 tickets, making it their eighth-biggest film ever before opening. The 1.43:1 screen is the world's largest, attracting global travelers. Drobik notes the industry moved to USB sticks but emphasizes the immersive experience of large-format film.
