Béatrice Uwambaje Publishes Bilingual French-Kinyarwanda Tale 'La petite tortue-étoile' on Rwandan Genocide

Béatrice Uwambaje Georget has released 'La petite tortue-étoile,' a bilingual French-Kinyarwanda fable addressing the 1994 Rwandan genocide through allegory. The author, who fled Rwanda at age 20 during the genocide and has lived in France for nearly three decades, transforms her personal exile experience into a universal resilience narrative. Illustrated by Marcello Pettineo, the self-published work follows Ikamba, an ochre turtle forced into exile who eventually gives birth far from home. Uwambaje chose the fable form to gain distance from her trauma while connecting with childhood storytelling traditions. Symbolism plays a crucial role: cows represent Rwandan wealth and sacredness, while the turtle embodies patience, perseverance, and protection through its shell. The author initially wrote two pages in French before composing entirely in Kinyarwanda—her first attempt writing in her native language—then retranslating to French, questioning her linguistic fluency after decades abroad. Previously, Uwambaje published 'Le Silence des Collines' with Éditions Sépia and 'Elles dansaient sous la pluie' with Éditions Vérone, both drawing from her genocide survival. The book launched on April 13, 2026. A separate segment mentions Ottawa's VIF (Valorisation d'Initiatives Francophones) program, a pan-Canadian youth initiative explained by Ajà Besler of Réseau Dialogue, with musical programming featuring Naâman's song 'Toi et moi.'
