BBC radio host Elis James turns Welsh small-world game into segment

Elis James, co-host of the BBC radio comedy show "Elis James and John Robins," runs a weekly segment called "Cymru Connections" (pronounced kum-ri) where he has 60 seconds to find a mutual acquaintance with a Welsh caller. The segment, which began in 2024, succeeds about half the time. James, who lives in London but frequently returns to Wales, draws on an extensive network that includes friends and local celebrities such as musicians and sports figures; he also writes about Welsh football for publications including The Guardian. The idea emerged from over a decade of on-air conversations, seven of them on BBC Radio 5 Live, where James would naturally discover common connections with Welsh callers. James described the practice as "typically Welsh" and a form of cordiality rather than nosiness. Experts attribute this tendency to the importance Welsh people place on preserving their culture and language, as well as the historical development of close-knit communities around coal mines and factories in South Wales. The segment is so popular that listeners have reported receiving calls from friends when mentioned on air. James shows visible frustration when he fails to find a connection, saying it feels like he has "let down my country."
