BBC DJ Paul Gambaccini reveals Alzheimer's diagnosis

In 2025, Paul Gambaccini, a well-known BBC radio host, was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease at the age of 77. Known as "The Great Gambo" and "The Professor of Pop," he expressed his desire to continue presenting shows on BBC Radio 2 and Greatest Hits Radio. His broadcasting journey began with Rolling Stone, and he became part of BBC Radio 1 in 1973. Gambaccini also helped launch Classic FM in 1992 and has been involved with several BBC channels, including Radio 1 through 4. Inducted into the Radio Academy Hall of Fame in 2005, he referenced Freddie Mercury in his statement about facing time's challenges. Andy Ashton, from Greatest Hits Radio, praised his bravery, while the Alzheimer's Society noted his experience shows that life continues after such a diagnosis. His last show for BBC Radio 2 aired from Wogan House in February 2024.
