BBC Announces Factual Drama on Sarah Everard Murder Case and Police Failures

The BBC has commissioned a two-part factual drama examining the murder of Sarah Everard and the institutional failures that enabled her killer to remain a police officer. Sarah Everard, a 33-year-old woman, was abducted, raped, and murdered by serving Metropolitan Police officer Wayne Couzens in south London on March 3, 2021. Couzens used his position to deceive Everard by falsely claiming she had violated COVID-19 lockdown restrictions while she was walking home in Clapham. The currently untitled series will investigate how Couzens, who had a history of sexual offenses including three counts of indecent exposure—one committed just days before the murder—was able to continue serving in various police forces despite multiple red flags. Award-winning writer Jeff Pope, known for previous real-life crime dramas such as 'Suspect: The Shooting of Jean Charles de Menezes' and 'Little Boy Blue,' is producing the series. Pope stated the central question of the drama is how Couzens remained an officer after committing numerous sexual crimes over an extended period. According to the BBC, the production will explore how evidence of sexual misconduct was repeatedly ignored due to inadequate vetting, insufficient training, and lack of motivation within police forces, preventing crucial information from being gathered. The drama will also address the erosion of public trust in policing, particularly regarding violence against women and girls. Everard's killing prompted widespread national protests and led many women to share personal experiences of feeling unsafe in public spaces. The BBC emphasizes the series will be handled with sensitivity and respect, with the production team maintaining communication with Everard's family. Lindsay Salt, director of BBC Drama, noted that drama can sensitively address real-life subjects and that this series aims to keep the issues that contributed to Everard's murder in public discourse while holding police accountable. Couzens is currently serving a whole-life sentence for his crimes.
