Bayern restructures state museums for greater autonomy

institutional · 2026-07-15

Starting in 2029, Bavaria will transform its 18 state museums into associations to promote greater autonomy and financial accountability. Art Minister Markus Blume unveiled this initiative in the Bavarian state parliament, with the goal of implementing contemporary leadership models while maintaining the unique character of each museum. The state will continue to own the collections and properties. The Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlung will be dissolved, giving way to a unified leadership for the Bavarian State Museums association. This initiative stems from the 'Reformkommission Museumsoffensive' report by Markus Michalke and Rolf Nonnenmacher, which suggests the formation of ten associations. Notable collaborations will include the Alte and Neue Pinakothek, alongside the establishment of a Museum für Industriekultur. Museums such as Brandhorst, Archäologische Staatssammlung, Museum Fünf Kontinente, and Staatliche Graphische Sammlung will maintain their independence.
