Barcelona Named UNESCO-UIA World Capital of Architecture for 2026 with Extensive Program

Barcelona has been designated as the UNESCO-UIA World Capital of Architecture for 2026, hosting the International Union of Architects World Congress from June 28 to July 4. The city will also commemorate several significant anniversaries: the centenary of Antoni Gaudí's death, 150 years since the passing of urban planner Ildefons Cerdá, and the 50th anniversary of the Miró Foundation. The architectural program spans ten months with 270 proposals and over 1,500 activities across Barcelona's ten districts, emphasizing decentralization and community engagement. Key events include the Arquitectos Studios Sessions featuring international architects like BIG, Carmelo Zappulla, and Benedetta Tagliabue. The initiative aims to highlight Barcelona's urban transformation, including recent developments in areas like Glóries and Poblenou, and legacy projects such as the 'Project for Blind Facades' competition for young architects. The former Gustavo Gili publishing house will become the Casa de l'Arquitectura de Barcelona, housing the Mies van der Rohe Foundation. Future urban plans include the conversion of the Tres Chimeneas industrial site into the Catalunya Media City and the redevelopment of the MNAC museum with a new entrance from Plaza de España by 2029.
