Barber Institute of Fine Arts begins £14.8m transformation

The Barber Institute of Fine Arts at the University of Birmingham has commenced a major transformation project following a successful £14.8 million fundraising campaign. The Grade I listed Art Deco building on the Edgbaston campus is undergoing improvements to enhance accessibility and the presentation of art and music. A ramp and accessible ground-floor entrance are being installed at the side of the building, and the terrace is being enlarged. New air-handling equipment and support beams have been hoisted by crane to roof level for a new plant room under the glass pyramid. Extensive work is retrofitting a fresh-air ventilation system into the concert hall.
