Bank of England Governor Defends Cyber Defenses Against Frontier AI Threats

Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey published a letter in response to Connor Axiotes' Daily Mail article warning that frontier AI could accelerate cyber attacks. Bailey refuted claims that the Bank's cyber defenses are unsophisticated, calling them 'totally wrong, unfounded and dangerous.' While declining to detail specific defenses for security reasons, he assured that the Bank has appropriate investment, expertise, and capabilities, working closely with the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC). Bailey emphasized that the broader risk of frontier AI to the financial sector is the real concern, potentially making attacks faster, outages more disruptive, and scams more convincing. He noted that the Bank has long urged firms to strengthen detection, patch vulnerabilities, and recover quickly, requiring proof through stress tests and penetration testing. Bailey also called for stronger international coordination on testing frontier AI models before deployment, stating that no country can isolate itself from these risks. He highlighted the UK's advantageous position with the AI Security Institute and NCSC, and confirmed the Bank is working rapidly with these bodies and international partners to enhance cyber resilience.
