Bangkok and Hanoi Emerge as Asian Art Centers Through Private Initiatives and Experimental Practices

Following Art Basel Hong Kong, Bangkok and Hanoi demonstrate evolving art scenes through private museums and experimental platforms. In Bangkok, Dib Bangkok opened in December 2025 as a private museum featuring James Turrell installations, while director Miwako Tezuka notes gallery growth since 2018 and hybrid models at Bangkok CityCity Gallery and SAC Gallery. The Bangkok Art Biennale, Bangkok Kunsthalle, and artist-led projects like Ghost biennial founded in 2018 by Korakrit Arunanondchai and Akapol Op Sudasna contribute to a layered network. Hanoi's Vietnam Art Collection (VAC) hosts "Murmur" exhibition from April 6 to May 24, 2026, with founder Muchun Niu highlighting intellectual depth but lacking infrastructure. Historical experimental practices date to the late 1990s, supported by Nha San Collective, APD Center, A Space, VCCA, and Hanoi Grapevine. Ho Chi Minh City contrasts with commercial orientation through Galerie Quynh, Nguyen Art Foundation, and Vin Gallery expanding to Shanghai. Recent developments include a new government-recognized art fair recruiting global galleries and Vietnam's first Venice Biennale pavilion curated by Do Tuong Linh, VAC's first curatorial fellow. Both cities show energy without fully formed ecosystems, moving beyond Hong Kong and Seoul models through private initiatives.
