At Balenciaga's fall 2026 couture show in Paris, designer Pierpaolo Picciolo presented his debut couture collection, which included crystal-covered versions of the iconic City bag. Originally designed by Nicolas Ghesquière in 2001 as the Le Dix Motorcycle Lariat, the City bag was revolutionary for its slouchy silhouette, fringed details, and chunky silver hardware, challenging the rigid luxury leather norms of the early aughts. The bag became a Y2K phenomenon, carried by celebrities like Kate Moss, Nicole Richie, and the Olsen twins, and vintage versions now sell for double their original price on resale sites. Piccioli's couture iteration, shown in looks 5 and 21, features shiny silver metal and rose gold crystal mesh, as detailed by Balenciaga leather goods designer Minyoung Gil on Instagram. No price has been announced, but the bags are expected to be extremely expensive and available only to VIP clients. This move follows a trend of high-fashion labels making iconic handbags even more exclusive, such as Chanel's crumpled mini flap bags by Matthieu Blazy and Hermès' crystal-covered Birkins for private clients like Paris Hilton.
