Balena Science Launches BioCir® Flexible Plastic Alternatives for High-Performance Applications

Balena Science has introduced BioCir®, a range of bio-based materials that aim to replicate the adaptability and effectiveness of traditional plastics while promoting circularity. These materials, derived from renewable sources such as castor beans, natural oils, and polysaccharides, feature 50-100% bio-based content and are capable of biodegrading in soil under specific conditions. The BioCir® lineup consists of BioCir® Flex, BioCir® Flex3D, BioCir® X, and BioCir® Foam, suitable for injection molding, 3D printing, and extrusion. Their uses span from lifestyle items and accessories to footwear and furniture. Notably, a flexible frisbee made from BioCir® X, which is produced from bacterially fermented bioplastic, decomposes in compost, soil, and marine settings. Designers can work with Balena Science's material team or independently obtain and process these materials. Custom solutions, including tailored colors using standard masterbatches, are available. The company also runs a take-back initiative and collaborates with a global network of industrial composting facilities to guarantee appropriate end-of-life management.
