Avignon Museums Face Temporary Closures Amid Budget Cuts

This fall, several institutions under Avignon Musées will be temporarily shut down: the Musée Calvet will close from 21 September to 8 December, while the Petit Palais will be unavailable from 16 November to 1 December. Additionally, the Muséum Requien and Bains Pommer will remain closed for the entire month of December. The city hall has indicated that these closures are necessary for collection care and future planning, though details regarding maintenance or restoration remain vague. This decision is part of a larger cost-cutting strategy initiated by Mayor Olivier Galzi, who conducted an audit that uncovered a serious financial crisis. Previously, closures took place from 13 July to 1 September due to budget issues, and in September, a 5.9% reduction in subsidies for cultural associations was announced, along with the cancellation of events for the Petit Palais's anniversary.
