Australian Public Art Initiatives Champion Accessibility Through d/Deaf and Disabled Artists

Several Australian public art projects are demonstrating how prioritizing accessibility can transform urban spaces. In Brisbane, the City Council's Outdoor Gallery program commissioned AMPLIFY ME!, an exhibition curated by Nicole Crosswell with a collective of artists with disabilities. Running from 2025 to 2026, the exhibition features light boxes, banners, and digital screens across the CBD, including Marcus Nunn's work on Edward Street. The project has extended its initial six-month run to twelve months due to positive reception and has helped advance participating artists' careers, with work shown at Side Gallery and Brisbane's World Science Festival. In Darwin, the City of Darwin and Northern Territory Government supported Magical Mangroves (2019-2021), created by The Free Space Studio's 18 artists with disabilities from Arts Access Darwin. Inspired by Larrakia custodian Nadine Lee, the designs were integrated into playground structures at the Green Ants' Nest Playspace, an accessible environment. Ongoing collaborations since 2023 have expanded the project, with artist Tara Darcy creating designs for light poles. Public artist Julian Pereira's work The Thinker, exhibited at Sculpture by the Sea in Cottesloe and Sydney in 2024, reinterprets Rodin's sculpture using the international wheelchair symbol to highlight accessibility barriers in coastal landscapes. These initiatives illustrate how involving d/Deaf and disabled artists in public art commissions fosters inclusive design and enriches community spaces.
