Australian Museum Showcases Historic Swainson Book Collection Online

The Australian Museum has launched a digital resource highlighting the William Swainson book collection, acquired in 1858. This acquisition significantly expanded the museum's library, originally holding about 100 titles, by adding 227 volumes, with 164 volumes still preserved in its Rare Books section. Swainson, a 19th-century natural scientist and illustrator, compiled these books for his research, and they feature his handwritten notes and sketches. The collection's identification was aided by Matthew Stephens' 2013 doctoral thesis, enabling detailed cataloging. Swainson is noted for pioneering lithography in zoological illustrations. The online section provides access to information about the collection and Swainson's works, underscoring its historical importance in natural science and art.
