Australian Museum Acquires Significant Kimberley Boab Nut Collection

In early 2021, the Australian Museum received a donation of 265 carved and painted boab nuts from the Kimberley region of Western Australia. This nationally important collection was purchased directly from Aboriginal artists and art centers across multiple Kimberley communities. More than 80 artists are represented, including established elders and emerging creators such as John Whera, Ashley Oobagooma, Petrina Bedford, and Marion Cox. The artworks document cultural practices, life events, and stories through etching and painting, similar to emu egg traditions in southeastern Australia. This acquisition supports First Nations cultural enterprise and preserves knowledge for future generations.
