Australian Companies Take Performance to Skate Parks, Malls and Food Courts

Branch Nebula's acclaimed work, Snake Sessions, which won a Helpmann Award in 2016, has been showcased in 13 regional skate parks across Australia. Dancers collaborate with local skaters for a week before performing improvised routines. Co-Director Lee Wilson connects the company's street-style approach to its roots in 2004, pointing out the reduction of experimental art in Australia. Darcy Grant, Artistic Director of Gravity & Other Myths, emphasizes a food court performance as crucial for attracting non-theatre audiences during challenging economic times. STRUT Dance will feature Boris Charmatz's CERCLES at the 2026 Perth Festival, drawing record crowds. Co-Director James O'Hara observes an increase in public dance classes since CERCLES. STRUT's upcoming production, Mudh by Sonya Stephen, scheduled for November, aims to engage 75% new attendees, with free entry facilitating participation.
