Australian Camera Rental Firm Recovers Stolen Equipment Following Uber Courier Incident

A camera rental business in Marrickville, Australia, recovered approximately $32,600 worth of film equipment after an Uber courier driver allegedly took the gear without completing the delivery. The incident occurred on March 26 when Rentacam hired an Uber courier to transport filming equipment to a production company in Mona Vale. According to reports from 7NEWS, the driver collected the items, which included a camera, four lenses, and various accessories valued at around Australian $47,455, then canceled the job and departed with the equipment. Security footage captured the pickup at Rentacam's location. When the business contacted Uber, the company stated that both drivers involved claimed not to possess the items. Following media coverage by 7NEWS, which featured the security footage, the driver reportedly contacted Rentacam's Peter Soltys and arranged to return the gear by leaving it on a street. The equipment was retrieved undamaged. Soltys expressed confusion over the events but thanked the news outlet for their reporting. Uber indicated they are conducting an internal review and attempting to contact the delivery partner to understand the situation and ensure the return of the items. This case highlights concerns about courier services in the film industry, where such deliveries are common.
