Australian arts philanthropy inquiry reveals key donor motivations

A Federal Government parliamentary inquiry into arts and cultural philanthropy, meeting since February 2025, has gathered submissions from major institutions including the National Gallery of Australia (NGA), Museum of Contemporary Art Australia (MCA), TarraWarra Museum of Art, and Belvoir St Theatre. NGA Director Nick Mitzevich reported fundraising income of $26.8 million in 2024-25, crediting trust in leadership and institutional vision. MCA Director Suzanne Cotter noted low public awareness of cultural giving and proposed a national campaign. NAVA Executive Director Penelope Benton highlighted inequality between major institutions and smaller organisations. Creative Australia's James Boyd stated the top reason philanthropists don't give is they haven't been asked. Queensland Ballet's Rachael Walsh emphasised emotional connection. TarraWarra advocated for co-funded schemes, while Belvoir St Theatre pointed to the UK's Big Give model. Recommendations include making DGR status more accessible, increasing tax deductions, and simplifying bequests via superannuation.
