Another author, Lee, had his book mischaracterized by AI-written publicity copy. The Mushroom Tapes, about the Erin Patterson trial, was published just four months after the verdict, with authors spending more time touring than writing. NielsenIQ BookData recorded over 9,400 Australian print books scheduled for 2024, down 7% from the 10-year average, but self-published ebooks are growing. Publishers face rising printing costs while book prices remain static, and independent bookshops struggle against Amazon and big-box stores. Alice Grundy of the Australia Institute Press notes that rushed timelines collapse production schedules, while researchers Julienne van Loon, Bronwyn Coate, and Millicent Weber found that nationally significant books like Behrouz Boochani's No Friend But the Mountains and Bruce Pascoe's Dark Emu took longer than three months to gain traction. Small presses like Aniko Press and Pink Shorts Press are taking slower, more deliberate approaches. The average Australian author earns $18,200 a year from writing, and royalties are often out of reach. The industry's focus on speed risks alienating readers.
