Australia Bans AI-Generated Songs from Music Charts

Beginning this week, songs that are primarily or entirely produced by AI will no longer be allowed on Australia’s music charts, as they must now be 'substantially human made.' The Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) introduced this regulation to safeguard human creativity and avoid an AI-dominated music landscape. This decision comes after DJ Josh Fawaz's AI-enhanced rendition of Madonna's 'Like A Prayer' reached the top of the ARIA dance singles chart, sparking debate. According to the new guidelines, while AI may assist in areas like mastering, the songwriting and performance must be conducted by humans. ARIA's chief executive, Annabelle Herd, emphasized that unlicensed AI content threatens the integrity of recorded music. Artists are required to disclose any AI involvement, and ARIA reserves the right to modify chart rankings if AI-generated music is identified. Similar restrictions have been implemented in Sweden, and Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has committed to robust protections for artists against unauthorized AI exploitation.
