Audrey Niffenegger Publishes Sequel to The Time Traveler's Wife After 14 Years
Audrey Niffenegger's follow-up to her 2003 bestseller, Life Out of Order, tells the story of Alba, the daughter of Clare and Henry, who inherits the same genetic time-travel condition but with greater control and a willingness to use it for personal and political ends. The novel, written over 14 years, reflects Niffenegger's growing political engagement, which she says was radicalized by the Trump administration. She began writing in 2012, after Obama's re-election, and as she imagined dystopian futures, American politics increasingly caught up with her fictional scenarios. The book includes scenes of neo-Nazis, climate devastation, and civil unrest. Niffenegger, 63, lives in Chicago with her husband, Scottish artist Eddie Campbell, and is recovering from a serious illness. Her debut novel sold over 9 million copies and was adapted into a 2009 film and a 2022 HBO series. She received a $5 million advance for her second novel, Her Fearful Symmetry (2009). She founded the nonprofit Artists Book House in 2019. Her graphic novel The Night Bookmobile may be expanded into interlinked short stories. A silent film adaptation of her illustrated novel Three Incestuous Sisters is in development, with Dakota Johnson, Saoirse Ronan, and Jessie Buckley starring.
