In 2025, the audiobook sector experienced a 9% increase in sales, totaling $2.43 billion, as reported by the Audio Publishers Association's annual survey conducted by Toluna. Publishers listed over 750,000 active titles, marking a 43% rise from 2024. Revenue was primarily led by general fiction at 27%, followed by genres such as science fiction/fantasy, romance, and mysteries/thrillers/suspense. The fastest-growing categories included humor, general fiction, and children's/YA. Audio-first releases surged by 50%, generating $136 million, which represents 6% of total revenue. Additionally, a 2026 consumer survey by Edison Research revealed that 63% of listeners aged 18 and older had engaged with an audiobook in the past year, with 58% of US adults (157 million) having listened at some point. Convenience was a key factor for 86% of users, who cited multitasking as a reason for consumption. Access methods varied, with 49% purchasing directly, 48% using subscriptions, 46% borrowing from library apps, and 42% utilizing credits. AI-narrated audiobooks accounted for a mere 0.03% of sales, with interest in trying them declining from 70% to 61%. Concerns over piracy are rising, as 45% of listeners accessed content via YouTube, often illegally. To combat this, the Association of American Publishers has collaborated with Vermillio to eliminate unauthorized audiobooks from the platform.
