Atelier Siyu Designs Compact Shanghai Retail Space with Perforated Metal Partitions

Atelier Siyu has completed Saweol Space, a retail environment in Shanghai's Jing'an District that occupies a 23-square-meter corner unit within a mall atrium. The design employs a vertical approach using the 5.5-meter height to create a sense of scale beyond the limited floor area. A modular system of prefabricated metal frames forms the primary structure, consolidating functional elements like storage, garment racks, and a checkout counter along the perimeter. Perforated metal panels serve as visual filters, partially obscuring merchandise and encouraging closer inspection by customers. The layout treats the irregular footprint as a puzzle of sightlines, moving away from conventional open-plan retail. Circular floor patterns provide wayfinding cues, contrasting with the orthogonal metal framework. The entrance is recessed to create a transitional zone between the busy mall and the curated interior. The material palette emphasizes industrial finishes with visible joints and connections. This project demonstrates how rigorous spatial planning and prefabricated systems can create distinctive retail experiences within tight urban constraints.
